Getting gouged…

The Apple Store (Canada) - MacBook

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised by the high prices of the Apple’s computers, but I am. I don’t mean the standard meme of pricing differences between Macs vs PCs. Macs are generally better built, more stylish, and come with better software than an off-the-shelf PC, so I expect a (slight) premium. No, what I am referring to is the price difference between Macs in Canada and Macs in the US.

Apple has a history of fixing their prices until a new revision or product line comes along. So the $1249 of the low-end MacBook has been set for many months now. The price more or less made sense when it was introduced - with the exchange rate, the $1099 US price was approximately worth $1249 CAN. However, with the dramatic drop in the US dollar/appreciation of the Canadian dollar, a more equitable price would be $1016 CAN. So we’re paying approximately 25% more for the same computer!

The galling point is that Apple silently updated their MacBook line - so no need to change prices.

Sigh.
